De Werft in Geel nodigt u uit voor een fascinerende tentoonstelling waarin drie kunstenaars, elk met een unieke blik op materiaal en vorm, de natuur opnieuw tot leven brengen.
Paul Bourgeois, Jef Faes en Jef Gysen delen een fascinatie voor het tastbare en het vergankelijke, maar hun benadering varieert van poëtisch en wetenschappelijk tot architecturaal. Een diepgaande verkenning van de grenzen tussen natuur en kunst.
De verbondenheid met de Kempen is duidelijk voelbaar.
Jef Gysen en Jef Faes zijn beiden geboren en getogen in Geel. Als docenten aan de Kunstopleiding van het Heilig Graf in Turnhout hebben Paul Bourgeois, en in navolging, Jef Faes een belangrijke invloed gehad op veel heden- daagse kunstenaars.
Paul Bourgeois (1941, Wijnegem) Woont en werkt in Wijnegem
De kunst van Paul Bourgeois lijkt de traditionele schilderkunst te verlaten, maar blijft in essentie schilderkunst. Zijn werk ontstaat uit samengeperste affiches, lood, karton en linnen, onderweg verzameld en aangetast door de elementen.
Deze schijnbaar afgedankte materialen reanimeert hij tot kunstwerken met een nieuwe ziel.
Bourgeois' signatuur is de subtiele, monnikachtige perforatie die hij aanbrengt in de huid van deze materialen. Door duizenden zorgvuldig geplaatste doorboringen ontstaat een nieuwe, poëtische beeldtaal, waarin de kwetsbaarheid van het materiaal zowel behouden als versterkt wordt. Het reliëf, zichtbaar bij schuin invallend licht, geeft zijn werken een bijna archeologische dimensie. Het zijn stille getuigen van een dialoog tussen verval en hergeboorte.
Jef Faes (°1972, Geel) Woont en werkt in Eindhout.
Op het raakvlak van kunst en wetenschap onderzoekt Jef Faes de perfecte patronen en structuren van de natuur. Zijn werk richt zich op de schoonheid van geometrische vormen, zoals de honingraat, en vertaalt deze naar abstracte composities die even technisch als poëtisch zijn.
Voor zijn sculpturen maakt Faes soms gebruik van gerecycleerde materialen, die hij combineert met zijn achtergrond in kleurtheorie en optische illusies.
Zijn kleurrijke tempera-op-panelen en sculpturen, vaak beschilderd met verfijnde moirépatronen, lijken te bewegen en veranderen afhankelijk van het perspectief van de kijker.
Faes staat bekend om zijn multidisciplinaire aanpak en experimentele methodes, waaronder een eerder project waarin hij bijen liet meebouwen aan zijn kunstwerken. Deze wetenschappelijke precisie blijft aanwezig in zijn huidige werk, waarin de harmonie van natuurlijke systemen op meesterlijke wijze wordt verbeeld.

Voor deze tentoonstelling toont Jef Gysen een bijzondere reeks schilderijen die ontstaan zijn uit zijn observaties van een zorgvuldig vervaardigde maquette: een artificieel bos. Dit model diende als zijn laboratorium, waarin hij licht, textuur en perspectief onderzocht, voordat hij het vertaalde naar zijn doeken.
Zijn schilderijen creëren een illusie van ruimte en architectuur. Gysen speelt met de interactie tussen het concrete en het abstracte, waarbij het artificiële bos een metafoor wordt voor onze relatie met de natuur: gecontroleerd, geconstrueerd, maar tegelijkertijd vol leven en poëzie.
Zijn werken ademen een ongeziene dynamiek van lijnen en vormen, en nodigen uit om dieper te kijken naar wat ons vertrouwd lijkt. Door deze choreografie van chaos en structuur ontstaat een wereld die even fictioneel als herkenbaar is.

De tentoonstelling brengt drie kunstenaars samen die ieder een eigen dialoog aangaan met de natuur. Le lien avec la région de la Campine est clairement perceptible.
Jef Gysen et Jef Faes sont tous deux nés et ont grandi à Geel. En tant qu’enseignants à l’École des Arts du Heilig Graf à Turnhout, Paul Bourgeois, puis Jef Faes, ont eu une influence importante sur de nombreux artistes contemporains.
Paul Bourgeois (1941, Wijnegem)

L’art de Paul Bourgeois semble s’éloigner de la peinture traditionnelle, tout en restant essentiellement pictural. Ses œuvres naissent d’affiches compressées, de plomb, de carton et de lin, des matériaux collectés en chemin et altérés par les éléments.
Ces matériaux apparemment abandonnés sont réanimés pour devenir des œuvres d’art dotées d’une âme nouvelle.
La signature de Bourgeois réside dans la perforation subtile et presque monastique qu’il applique à la surface de ces matériaux. Des milliers de perforations soigneusement placées créent un nouveau langage visuel poétique, où la fragilité du matériau est à la fois préservée et renforcée. Le relief, visible sous une lumière rasante, confère à ses œuvres une dimension presque archéologique. Ces créations témoignent d’un dialogue silencieux entre déclin et renaissance.
Jef Faes (1972, Geel)

À la croisée de l’art et de la science, Jef Faes explore les motifs et structures parfaits de la nature. Son travail met en avant la beauté des formes géométriques, comme le motif en nid d’abeille, qu’il traduit en compositions abstraites aussi techniques que poétiques.
Pour ses sculptures, Faes utilise parfois des matériaux recyclés, qu’il associe à sa maîtrise de la théorie des couleurs et des illusions optiques.
Ses panneaux vibrants à la tempera et ses sculptures, souvent ornés de motifs moirés raffinés, semblent bouger et se transformer en fonction du point de vue du spectateur.
Connu pour son approche multidisciplinaire et ses méthodes expérimentales, Faes a notamment impliqué des abeilles dans la construction de ses œuvres dans un projet précédent. Cette précision scientifique reste présente dans son travail actuel, où il illustre magistralement l’harmonie des systèmes naturels.

Pour cette exposition, Jef Gysen présente une série exceptionnelle de peintures inspirées par ses observations d’une maquette minutieusement réalisée : une forêt artificielle. Ce modèle lui a servi de laboratoire, où il a étudié la lumière, la texture et la perspective avant de les transposer sur ses toiles.
Ses peintures créent une illusion d’espace et d’architecture. Gysen joue avec l’interaction entre le concret et l’abstrait, où la forêt artificielle devient une métaphore de notre relation à la nature : contrôlée, construite, mais en même temps pleine de vie et de poésie.
Ses œuvres respirent une dynamique inédite de lignes et de formes, et invitent à regarder au-delà de ce qui semble familier. Grâce à cette chorégraphie de chaos et de structure, un monde émerge, à la fois fictionnel et reconnaissable.
Trois artistes, une quête commune
L’exposition réunit trois artistes, chacun dialoguant à sa manière avec la nature. Paul Bourgeois explore le passé des matériaux, Jef Faes met en lumière l’harmonie des motifs et des structures, et Jef Gysen construit un monde naturel fictif qui défie la réalité. Louis Hulstaert est titulaire d’un doctorat en Études anciennes et Histoire de l’art de la KU Leuven, spécialisé en Iran et Proche-Orient ancien. Il est également licencié en Langues orientales anciennes (akkadien, araméen, vieux-perse).
Il a également enseigné l’histoire de l’art au Heilig Graf à Turnhout.

Jef Gysen and Jef Faes were both born and raised in Geel. As instructors at the Art Department of the Heilig Graf in Turnhout, Paul Bourgeois, and later Jef Faes, have significantly influenced many contemporary artists.
Paul Bourgeois (1941, Wijnegem)

Paul Bourgeois’s art seems to abandon traditional painting yet remains essentially rooted in it. His work emerges from compressed posters, lead, cardboard, and linen—materials collected and weathered by the elements.
These seemingly discarded materials are reanimated into artworks with a renewed soul.
Bourgeois's signature technique involves a subtle, almost monastic perforation of the material’s surface. Thousands of meticulously placed punctures create a new poetic visual language, preserving and enhancing the material’s fragility. The relief, visible under oblique lighting, gives his work an almost archaeological dimension. They stand as silent witnesses to a dialogue between decay and rebirth.
Jef Faes (1972, Geel)
Lives and works in Eindhout.
At the intersection of art and science, Jef Faes explores the perfect patterns and structures of nature. His work focuses on the beauty of geometric forms, such as the honeycomb, translating them into abstract compositions that are as technical as they are poetic.
For his sculptures, Faes often uses recycled materials, combining them with his expertise in color theory and optical illusions.
His vibrant tempera-on-panel pieces and sculptures, frequently adorned with intricate moiré patterns, appear to move and transform depending on the viewer’s perspective.
Known for his multidisciplinary approach and experimental methods, Faes has even involved bees in constructing his artworks in previous projects. This scientific precision continues to influence his current work, masterfully depicting the harmony of natural systems.
Jef Gysen (1969, Geel)
Lives and works in Sinaai.
For this exhibition, Jef Gysen presents a unique series of paintings inspired by his observations of a meticulously crafted model: an artificial forest. This model served as his laboratory, allowing him to study light, texture, and perspective before translating them onto his canvases.
His paintings create an illusion of space and architecture. Gysen plays with the interaction between the concrete and the abstract, where the artificial forest becomes a metaphor for our relationship with nature—controlled, constructed, yet full of life and poetry.
His works exude an unseen dynamism of lines and forms, inviting the viewer to look deeper into what seems familiar. Through this choreography of chaos and structure, a world emerges that is both fictional and recognizable.

Louis Hulstaert holds a PhD in Ancient Studies and Art History from KU Leuven, specializing in Iran and the Ancient Near East. Additionally, he is a graduate in Ancient Oriental Languages (Akkadian, Aramaic, Old Persian).
He also taught art history at the Heilig Graf in Turnhout.
